Certification of Organic Products aCERT

Organic agriculture is described by the United Nations FAO as “a holistic production management system that avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and genetically modified organisms, minimizes air, soil and water pollution, and optimizes the health and productivity of interdependent communities of plants, animals and people”.

The principles of organic agriculture as defined by IFOAM are:

  • The Health Principle: Organic agriculture must support and enhance the health of soil, plant, animal and human health simultaneously and indivisibly.
  • The Ecology Principle: Organic agriculture should be based on, mimic and support ecological systems and ecological cycles.
  • The Principle of Justice: Organic agriculture must be based on relationships that ensure fairness in terms of shared environmental and life opportunities.
  • The Principle of Care: Organic agriculture must succeed in a proactive and responsible manner to protect the health and well-being of both current and future generations and the environment.

As such, organic production methods have a dual social role, on the one hand by supplying a specific market that meets consumer demand for organic products and, on the other hand, by providing public goods that contribute to the protection of the environment and animal welfare, as well as to rural development.

Valuable information for consumers as well as tools for stakeholders in the organic farming sector can be found on the website of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development.
